Who will pay for the tram routes?

Line One, currently under construction, is 100% funded by the government (or should we say the taxpayer).

But for further tram extensions, Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Councils will have to fund locally 25% of the capital costs.

NET have not yet revealed how this money will be raised but options could include:

  • Council Tax - hasn't it already gone up enough over recent years, making us one of the most highly taxed Council areas in the Country?
  • Congestion Charge - similar to the £5 per day charge recently introduced on all cars entering London.
  • Workplace Parking Levy - employers in the city would be required to pay initially £150 per year for each employee car parking space they provide. Some will pass this on to the employee, others may consider relocating. (NET has already reported an intention to use the income from the Workplace Parking Levy to repay the high professional consultancy costs incurred).
