Will the tram be financially viable?

The argument for the tram and for the CW route is based on high patronage levels, creating a shift in vehicle usage by providing a frequent, modern and fast service to the city centre. It is claimed that around 600,000 users a year will come from the Clifton park and ride, and from the figures available we estimate that NET envisage around 1 million users a year from this area.

The predicted estimated cost for the CW route is £94 million. A considerable amount of tax payers money. We need public transport improvements now, not in 2009/10.

So, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council, if you are behind NET, and if you are confident with your patronage figures you will be equally confident that local residents would appreciate you embarking on the following low cost projects to improve public transport and help prove the case for the patronage predictions of CW tram route.

  • Build the Clifton park and ride now and use the number 48 bus to serve it (not that dissimilar to a tram and it runs along part of the tram route).
  • Improve the bus service serving the Compton Acres area, using modern buses that can accept wheelchairs and pushchairs and run the service every 10 minutes at peak times.

These projects would cost a fraction of the cost of the tram system and provide the service immediately to the community.
