Fuel Cell Buses are the way forward. They have zero emmisions (apart from water) and are currently being trialled in various European cities, including London.

NET argue the technology is a long way off - but so is the installation and running of Lines 2 and 3!!! Surely it is better to invest in the future and a system which has zero emmisions and is currently on trial. Trams are not that clean - electricity has to be generated somewhere and it mostly comes from either coal or nuclear powered stations.
